FIX:: Vista or Windows 7: Unable to modify Options

Postby Smokey on Thu Jan 28, 2010 2:06 am

For those of you using Vista or Windows 7 experiencing issues in a new SAGA install while modifying the Options menu, I have the solution for you.

Let me tell you about my install and then how to fix it.

I installed a fresh Windows 7, it installed the video drivers for my card. I installed SAGA, launched, and patched. I received an error message on launch of SAGA advising me to update the OpenGL drivers. Windows Update went ahead and installed a new video driver. I was then able to launch SAGA successfully and enter my nation.
I was unable to make any changes in the Options menu. I received error upon clicking OK: Can't find file "C" in 3 paths.
The necessary file usersettings.ini was not created before or after the launch and attempted changes in the Options menu.

-------------------
Now for the fix.
-------------------

Close SAGA if it is open.
Click Start button | Computer | Organize | Folder and search options
Click View tab | remove the check from "Hide extensions for known file types" | Click OK.
Navigate to: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Silverlode Interactive\SAGA
(Above path may differ for some computers)
Right-click a blank area in the right pane | Choose New > Text Document
Name the file usersettings.ini getting rid of the txt extension.
Copy all of the information in the box below, then paste it into the file we just created. Save and exit. Launch SAGA!

Thanks for posting this.

This is Zarathushtra and Smokey helped me out.

One additional little tip if for some reason the save data path is different on your computer is to do a search for "Silverlode" the data save path is the only one with that name in the folder.

Also be aware that this save data path is NOT the path you installed the game in. (default c:\program files(x86)\saga)

I got that can't find path C deal quite a bit as well. However, after running the game a few times everything seems to have fixed itself.

Close SAGA if it is open.
Click Start button | Control Panel | Folder options
Click View tab | remove the check from "Hide extensions for known file types" | Click OK.
Navigate to: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Silverlode Interactive\SAGA

then follow the rest from initial post.

Once you create this file, you can change the options using the options buttons in saga and it will update this file automatically.

For what it's worth, at least on XP, you don't need to actually put anything in the usersettings.ini file you create. You can just make the file exist, run Saga, make any changes to the options you want, and it should work. When nothing is found in usersettings.ini, it just plugs in the default values for you. I just did this on a brand new install of XP and Saga.

Also, the path regardless of which Windows version you're using is "%APPDATA%/Silverlode Interactive/SAGA" (yes, you can just type that into the address bar on the My Computer window). The environment variable %APPDATA% is already set to what it needs to be regardless of whether you're on XP, Vista, or 7.

I also use Windows Vista, and somehow it created the file automatically in the right place for me after I exited Saga and then restarted Saga.

Both Smokey's and my posts state where to save it:
